Inspiring Historical Literature - Please!

My students need to immerse themselves in historical novels such as Shadow Spinner and Of Nightingales That Weep so as to bring the time period to life.

My Students

In order to bring history alive, I've been having my students relive a time period by playing games, debating, and reenacting events, but only novels (with protagonists their age) will enable them to truly understand what it was like to live in that era.

Our school is a small public charter with little funds to spare for "non-essential" items.

Our students are from meager backgrounds, but are full of promise and enthusiasm. They're very active, charismatic, and curious. We have only one class per grade level and because of this we've been able to develop a loving community which fosters mutual admiration and respect. These students look to us for relevant and inspiring lessons and we work hard to ensure they aren't let down.

My Project

The last couple of years our students have been digging through textbooks, primary sources, videos, and encyclopedias to help their characters come to life in role-plays, but something is still missing. Historical literature allows the student to relive events in history through a first person experience. The sounds and smells come to life along with the tribulations of people in time period. We can read about the life in Medieval Asia, but much is disregarded if it's not given a human face which students can come to understand. These books will solidify an era in their minds as clearly as if it had happened to them.

When students hear adults or newscasters refer to another time or place they'll will be able to recall the atmosphere and perspectives of people back them.

Having context broadens their minds by allowing them to empathize with others or view events in another light.
