Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am a Mariachi Instructor at a Title I middle school. I have 3 beginner classes and 2 advanced classes. However, my pride and joy are the 20 students who come after school to make energetic music together...Mariachi Music!
Most of the musicians who are in the ensemble come from very low income families. As a program, we provide the authentic mariachi uniforms of a jacket, pant or skirt, bow, sash and boots. We just ask the students if they can buy a white dress shirt to complete the uniform. This year I had to personally buy 11 shirts due to the limited funds of the family.
We are kindly asking for your help to fund the transportation for our end of year trip. For all the hard work and commitment these students put in for rehearsals and performances for the community, we would like to reward the students with a trip to Disneyland and to watch Mariachi Sol de Mexico perform at the Cielito Lindo Mexican Restaurant. Mariachi Sol de Mexico was formed by Jóse Hernàndez in 1981 and was created to reflect the vision of an inspiring, artistic mariachi ensemble. As true representatives of a treasured cultural heritage, Sol de México is a cohesive, dynamic team who have accepted the vision to live on as the Nation's Premier Mariachi. José Hernàndez foresaw the future of mariachi in the hands of our precious youth. Yet, giving them the meaning of mariachi meant giving of self. To this end, José Hernàndez sought to establish the Mariachi Heritage Society in 1991...to teach future Mariachis.
The mission of this organization in part, is to educate and build an identity in our children with the value that mariachi music can have on their hearts and minds. José Hernàndez is an inspiration as an educator and I would love the kids to experience his passion for the music.
As a mariachi teacher of five years, I have seen how important the mariachi program is to the students. In a few cases, the mariachi program is the reason why students come to school. As a member of mariachi ensemble myself, our ensemble has two former students performing along side of the professionals while attending college. Please help us in funding our trip to keep our young musicians inspired and to keep our high risk students in school.
