My Students
My school community includes a large population of Hispanic immigrants and middle eastern refugees.
With over 79% of my students being economically disadvantaged and 17% with limited English proficiency, they enter my middle school science classroom facing many obstacles.
But these challenges become opportunities for developing grit and growing a passion for learning as I strive to engage them in science that addresses real world phenomena with 21st-century solutions. They just need some 21st-century science tools to help them reach their potential.
My Project
My sixth graders need preserved frogs for a dissection lab as the culminating hands-on experience of a unit studying organ systems.
Nothing can ever replace the experience of that first frog dissection lab for learning the wonders and complexity of living systems.
Dissections are what make the digital and text book learning become tangibly real. This dissection helps students to understand the interconnections of the organ systems in their own bodies. This makes the science learning relevant and meaningful to themselves. Students often express interest in pursuing medical careers after our dissection lab. Few labs have such a meaningful impact on student learning than a dissection.
Nearly all students from low‑income households
