Mrs. Holloway from Compton CA is requesting a class trip through DonorsChoose, the most trusted classroom funding site for teachers.
My students need a field trip to see the movie "Bully".

Have you ever been afraid to go to school? To leave the classroom? To walk down the hall? To tell the truth? My students are afraid to be nice! They feel like if you can't beat them...join them and many of the students have become bullies and gang members because they don't want to be bullied.
My students are from a Title 1 school in California.
We have low test scores but not because our students lack intelligence but because they have too many other serious events on their mind. They have potential and the ability to be great people. They are loving and just want to be loved. They attend a school that has more than its fair share of bullies and gangs. When alone, many of them will confess that they are afraid to be nice, honest, and thoughtful. They want to just be accepted and loved and are worried that being themselves will put them on the list of being bullied.
How do you convince a child that it's okay to be kind when the minute they walk out your classroom they could be humiliated or injured for doing so? I thought about just including one class in this field trip, but that wouldn't help solve the problem at hand. We would just go back to school and nothing would have changed. This has to be a whole school effort. If we really want to make a change and not just attend a field trip then we all have to be involved. This is an amazing opportunity to take a stand and change lives! It gets hard to come into the classroom with a smile when one of the students you smile at could end up dead or in jail. In their world the bullies survive and the kind ones don't...can you imagine a life like this? Would a test score ever matter to you in a life like this? We have to change the mindset of the community in order to heal the children.
I couldn't think of a greater opportunity to help my students see the importance of living in a bully free environment.
Many times we have money for field trips to museums and parks, but we forget about field trips for the soul. This field trip will be more than a bus ride to a movie theater...it just might change one bully into being kind and it might save a life.
