Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Do you remember the first time you held a camera up to your face and saw the possibility before you in the viewfinder? That experience has been lost to more and more of our youth as the camera becomes more disconnected from them taking a picture with their arms outstretched to see the screen.
My students often do not even get the experience of taking a picture that isn't grainy from low resolution or blurry due to a delay in the capture of an image.
Many people assume that all teenagers have a smartphone in their hand, but most kids in a rural community do not have family incomes that can support those kinds of luxuries. They have yet to experience the magic of capturing the beauty that surrounds them in a way that deeply reflect that beauty instead of only being reminiscent of it.
My Project
With the purchase of a camera- a real camera, one in which they can turn the lens with a hand to adjust how the image fills the frame or experiment with shutter speed to impact light and exposure- students will be experience an art-form that was previously out of reach. Students will capture not only their own imaginations, but the stories of the entire school, preK-12, by having the technology necessary for a yearbook, as well as enter the world of podcasting through the video feature this camera offers. Our students sometimes see their career choices narrowly beyond our small community, I hope to open their eyes to new options and paths their lives can take through photography and video. Having one camera means we can begin embarking in both.
Please, support our kids in having a working piece of equipment that larger schools often take for granted.
This purchase will not only impact a small class of photojournalists now- but an entire school and community waiting to capture its beauty.
