Inspiring Art and Storytelling on the Green Screen

My Project

I am often touched by the level of care and kindness with which all my students help each other in our quest to learn. Now, even in my 20th year as an educator, my students never cease to amaze me with their persistence and grit in learning new content, as well as their inquisitiveness, creativity, and eagerness to learn new things. As we get closer to wrapping up our school year, I am thinking of more memorable and engaging ways we can create and express ourselves artistically--in particular, with this project for making short films and animated art with green screen technology.

It's been a longtime dream to have my students create short films, and this would finally give us that wondrous opportunity.

As we begin to finish up our school year together, this would be the perfect activity for us to cap off our 2nd grade journey, using many of the skills, strategies, and knowledge we've acquired in language, social studies, technology, and the visual and performing arts. The camera stand will be used with an iPad to film visual backgrounds created by the students for animated shorts, starting with a journey into space, for example, or across the city, or even under the ocean. The green screens will then be used to film students as they recite poems, read stories they've written, or perform short skits with puppets they designed earlier this year. I also anticipate using this equipment to create newsroom updates in the future. The possibilities with green screen technology are endless.
