Inspiring a Love of Shakespeare

I am an English teacher in a large overcrowded public high school in Manhattan called Norman Thomas High School, which serves solely minority students of low economic backgrounds from Harlem, Brooklyn, and the Bronx. 100% of my students receive free lunch. In my six years of teaching, I have found that although when first mentioning Shakespeare, my students tend to grumble, they become quickly enamored with his plays with only a little taste. After a few scenes, students are easily engrossed in the Bard's tragedies and comedies and proudly proclaim their love of Shakespeare upon the realization that these plays are a great deal more universal and accessible than they seem at first glance. Dramas, especially those by Shakespeare, are meant to see performed. Since I have been working on numerous projects after completing a unit on The Tragedy of Julius Caesar with my 10th and 11th grade classes, it came as a wonderful surprise to hear that Julius Caesar is coming to Broadway, with none other than Denzel Washington playing Brutus! When I told my students about this performance, they were extremely excited, imploring me to take them to see it. Although my students have lived in New York City their whole lives, none of them have ever been able to see a Broadway show, let alone one which they have mastered and have grown to love. The opportunity for my students to see a Broadway play is only more extraordinary given that Denzel Washington, a renowned African American actor and a positive role model to urban teenagers, plays such a pivotal role in this Shakespearean performance! Sadly, Caesar does not come cheaply. The play opens in March and my classes would be able to see a Wednesday matinee in April (providing we have enough funding to issue a down payment upon booking our tickets).
