Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My amazing students are high school sophomores, juniors, and seniors at a continuation high school in Southern California. Many of our students are English Learners, and the majority of our students come from low-income households.
Each student comes to our school with his or her own story to tell, and if they can be inspired by the stories of others, they may be more likely to use their own life experiences to inspire change and re-write their life stories.
A couple years ago, I had a 12th grade student whose reading abilities were significantly below his grade level. When I gave him choice for a book to read for a class project, he was so proud of himself when he finished his first novel ever! I want all of my students to experience that joy and pride when they finish a novel and discover their own love for reading.
My Project
These books, The Crossover, Crank, Before I Let Go, and other books will capture the interest of my high school students, some of whom have never read a novel cover to cover. I teach at a continuation high school in Southern California, and I want to encourage my students to develop confidence as readers, as well as find education meaningful and engaging, beginning with inspiring a love for reading.
A love for reading inspires a love for learning; I have carefully selected the books that my students would enjoy reading the most.
Students will be provided with choices to match their interests during the independent reading time, which is essential for developing a love for reading.
Students will gain confidence in their reading abilities through grade-level novels in a variety of genres to spark the curiosity of even the most reluctant readers. I want to help them redefine their passion for learning through reading high-interest books of choice that will be on display throughout my classroom in various locations, including a book buffet, where students sample different books and decide which titles best meet their reading tastes!
