Inspiring a Love for Literacy With Read Alouds

Help me give my students books for read aloud from the SSYRA (Sunshine State Young Reader Award grades 3-5) and SSYAR Jr. (grades K-2) reading list that will motivate and encourage a love for reading!

FULLY FUNDED! Mrs. Loya's classroom raised $326

My Project

This project seeks to provide books from this year's book list from an organization in our state called F.A.M.E. (Florida Association for Media in Education). F.A.M.E sponsors SSYRA (Sunshine State Young Reader Award) for grades 3-5 and SSYRA Jr. for grades K-2. These statewide programs encourage students to grow a love for reading and literacy. The books on these two lists are selected for their wide appeal, literary value, varied genres, curriculum connections, and/or multicultural representation. All titles have also been published more recently (in most cases within the last two years), and therefore expose students to newer books and new series which often begin with the first title being an SSYRA book.

These read-alouds will create excitement for literacy, inspiring and motivating students to read the other books from the 2024-2025 SSYRA and SSYRA Jr reading lists.

By using these books as read-aloud, students will become more aware and excited to participate in the SSYRA and SSYRA JR. programs. Students have the chance to earn a tag (not included in this project) and other incentives as they read through each title on the book lists. Students have a chance to vote for their favorite book on each list after they have read three of the books independently. By having the books be in a 'contest' or 'battle of the books', students become even more invested and excited about the SSYRA books! This creates more conversation about the types of books students enjoy reading, leading them to realize that reading is not just for academics, but for enjoyment as well. Read-alouds have the power to inspire a live-long love for literacy!

I am eager to give students the opportunity to read some amazing books and grow their love for learning and literacy!
