My Students

Many of the students in my school hear these things all the time.

Districts next door to ours have and get so many supplies and resources yet our kids need these things too. They see that they don’t have the same necessities and they wonder why. Some just resign themselves to never succeeding. On a trip last year to visit a college in the next town, so many students’ eyes were wide open at the beautiful campus, the gorgeous buildings, the 3 story library with hundreds of thousands of books, the dining hall with hundreds of choices, and the dormitories where the college students made their homes. I could see that they were inspired by the possibility of attending such a college. I want them to dream.

The truth is that small things like composition books, batteries for calculators, rulers, hundreds of pencils, a working pencil sharpener, and copy paper seem like basic things that each classroom should have, yet there’s no money in the budget. Therefore we have to supply things or we go without. They should dream without the nightmare of not having the tools they need to get there.

My Project

On a trip last year to visit a college in the next town, so many students’ eyes were wide open at the beautiful campus, the gorgeous buildings, the 3 story library with hundreds of thousands of books, the dining hall with hundreds of choices, and the dormitories where the college students made their homes. I could see that they were inspired by the possibility of attending such a college. I want them to dream.

Don’t let geography limit their potential as well as their dreams.

If these children lived just 1-2 miles west, they’d have all of this and more in their classrooms.

They need individual Composition Notebooks in order to compile their “Do Now” activities as an SAT notebook throughout the year. They will use the ten additional graphing calculators to supplement the 20 already in use thanks to a prior Donor Choose project, and the batteries to power them, and gain an advantage on their SAT’s. They need to have regular and colored pencils for daily class work, and a working sharpener. They need rulers for graphing and for creating as well as measurement. All are basic materials that we all took for granted in our schooling.
