Inspired Note Taking

Help me give my students note taking resources for their Doodle Note activities and lighting to improve visibilty when the classroom lights are turned off by request.

My Students

The students I have the privilege to teach are both bright and extremely curious about the world around them. I teach the entire grade-level science, and I have a very active classroom.

I am a teacher at a charter school, which means that my students come to me from all over the county.

Our school is a school of choice so my students are very excited about the education they are receiving. I want to give them every opportunity to make as many memories as they can in my class. All the while, they are learning so much and don't even realize it!

My Project

I am a firm believer in investigation before instruction. As a science teacher, I'm geared to investigate! This strategy of instruction leads to children taking more ownership in their learning: they have background knowledge before I start with major instruction, they pre-define vocabulary in their own words, and so much more!

Each time a new concept is introduced, the scholars in my classroom explore the concept on their own and take what I call Doodle Notes to gain some background information before diving in deeper.

We discuss how the use of color activates different parts of the brain. How drawing pictures and diagrams helps us understand what we have read and experienced. Since approaching note-taking in this fashion, students are more engaged and excited about starting a new unit!

The items I'm asking for will help them with their note-taking strategies in so many ways. The spinning organizer will be used to organize table materials so all of their note-taking needs are met without them having to leave their seats. The colored pens will be used to add color to their notes, diagrams, and pictures. The post-it notes will be used by scholars in whatever way they need to make their notes stand out.

My scholars also love taking notes while reading articles and investigating new material with the fluorescent lights off. It feels cozy to them. Unfortunately, there are some areas in class that lack light. I would like to use the LED light strands and desk lamps to give scholars extra lighting when we have the main lights off.
