My Students

I teach at one of the most diverse schools in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. I am a Special Education certified teacher, who teaches a variety of English classes and additionally writes IEPs for students with disabilities. One of the core mission statements of our district is to prepare students "to succeed in a changing, global society by inspiring lifelong learning in a caring, collaborative community." It is my personal mission to fulfill this in my classroom by creating an environment where students can succeed.

One of the challenges my students face is surrendering to the rigidity of the traditional classroom.

Students with ADHD often struggle with staying in desks without having the option to move around. I have had success with allowing students to stand or sit on the floor, but providing them with additional non-traditional seating options would benefit their whole learning experience.

My Project

Flexible seating is a must have for today's modern learners. These new flexible seating options will give them control over their environment. The different seat options, such as the Adirondacks and beanbag options, along with the fidget bands, will aid in this endeavor. One of my goals as an educator is to give my students choices to empower them throughout their education. It is my personal mission to fulfill this in my classroom by creating an environment where students can succeed.

I am hoping to turn my classroom into a space where my students feel like they have a choice in their learning.
