Inspired by Sensory Integration

Help me give my students School Specialty Finished Hollow Blocks and a Lakeshore Color-Changing Light table to diversify our learning in our preschool special education classroom. Sensory integration is key to our curriculum. These will expand learning!

My Project

My classroom is guided by children's interests and built off of developmentally appropriate constructivist learning practices. For our incredible neurodiverse students, we presume competency, encourage curiosity, and foster risk taking through our whole bodies and sensory experiences. Having the opportunity to use large blocks to build won't only support their gross and fine motor muscles and coordination, but it will also support language development (AAC and Coreboards included!) through the stimulation of imagination for those blocks. They will use social and emotional regulation to plan and problem-solve while working alone, with an adult, or, as most commonly happens in my classroom, collaboratively with a few peers.

In my past classroom at a laboratory school, children loved building stages, planes, grocery stores, flower shops, and more.

When I switched my role from a laboratory teacher to a public school teacher, I was shocked to be met with comments like, "They can't," "They might hurt themselves," or "They can just use cardboard blocks." My advocacy and personal wallet have supplied our classroom with many activities and materials that are not only neuro-inclusive but also challenging and wonder-driven for all students. An IEP doesn't determine the strength of muscle or imagination. It should expand it!

This is why I also selected a light table. This is the first classroom I haven't had a light table to inspire different kinds of science related concepts as children are given provocations to build, write, draw, and with clear bins-play in sensory experiences like colored water, orbies, and salt. Children learn through investigating and interacting with materials.

Both of these (very pricy but valuable items!) would support a curriculum that includes developmental ranges of children with stills scattered between 13 months-60 months (and sometimes beyond). All ages and abilities can learn with these.
