Inspired Authors! Tools to Navigate the Writing Process I
My students need supplies they can use to improve their writing such as Banish Boring Words, Grammar Girl, and American Heritage books, to serve as reference materials.
I am working to create a library of writing resources for my small group Language Arts students. These mixed-grade, middle school students come to my class with a wide variety of abilities and talents. Ideal materials have features that allow all students universal access to the curriculum.
The students in my class focus intently on meeting the structural requirements of their essays.
In this process their brilliant and creative voices can be lost. My goal is to focus the revision process on teaching students to infuse their own personal voice back into their essays. Additionally, students often rely heavily on adult support with the proof reading component of the writing process. I would like to provide students with materials that will scaffold them towards a higher degree of self-monitoring with respect to their revision and editing.
My Project
There are numerous resources for students that can bring them a sense of independence and confidence that their writing is truly their own. The chosen resources are visually formatted in such a way that they are easy for students to navigate with minimal adult support. Therefore, I am requesting 1 copy of Grammar Girl Presents the Ultimate Writing Guide for Students, 1 copy of Banish Boring Words (Enhanced eBook), 1 copy of The American Heritage Student Grammar Dictionary, as well as 3 copies of The American Heritage Student Thesaurus and The American Heritage Student Dictionary to meet the needs of my small group classes.
With proper instruction and readily available resources, each of my students are highly capable of achieving any goal that they set for themselves.
My overall goal, as their teacher, is to bridge the gap between the student's personal one-on-one support that we provide, and the student's ability to independently utilize resources or skills that they have gained to stay fully involved as they work their way through the writing process.
