My Students

Teaching in a low socioeconomic status school environment can be a challenge, but the students that I teach make this a challenge worth facing. My students come from varied backgrounds, from being refugees and first-generation citizens to living in single-parent homes and being homeless. My students work hard and they are eager to learn and succeed.

Some of my students are the primary after-school caretakers of younger siblings, while some ride the bus to a shelter that serves as their current home.

Many of my middle school students do not have cell phones, and even more have no computer access outside of school.

Poverty must not be a barrier to learning, and learning must offer an escape from poverty. It is our job as a society to offer these children a chance to escape from poverty, and a good education will open the door to that chance.

My Project

Books are the tools that open the door to opportunities. But for middle school-aged students who have not mastered the skill of reading, the books available in school can be out of reach.

"If you don’t like to read, you haven’t found the right book."

J.K. Rowling's statement is so pivotal, and I need to help my students find the right book that is at the right level for them. Books like Our House Is On Fire and Greta and the Giants will inspire my students with teachings that show them they can impact the world. These books will help my students become more well-informed, global citizens.
