This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

What motivated you to stay in school and graduate? What if your high school only graduated 7 out of 10 of its students? What if you didn't get that motivation at home or have models or good examples in your neighborhood? What would motivate you?

Middle school is the time when most students will decide whether they will stay in school or drop out.

Some of my students have a family member who is in a gang; they know where to buy drugs, and some have witnessed a shooting. With so many distractions outside of school, it can be challenging to convince students that education is the answer to a better life. But they walk through the doors of my classroom because they are inspired to learn something new and are willing to take risks to expand their perspective. I'm lucky to teach an arts class and give students an opportunity to find out what their "hook" is; to find out where their passion lies. I'm able to teach life-skills like concentration, observation, trust, imagination, self-confidence, and cooperation in group work. These competencies will help them in every other subject matter as well as enable them to survive in such a challenging area with so many obstacles.

My Project

I have established a common collaborative grouping system that holds students accountable to each other. Students work together in small groups to earn points for categories such as; completing their work, bringing their school supplies, doing their nightly reading homework, and consistently demonstrating positive and respectful behavior during class activities. Student groups are rewarded with raffle tickets for having the most points on a bi-weekly basis. When students find out that the grand prize is something truly exciting, they get excited; which in turn translates to higher motivation levels in the classroom. In middle school, when students choose a path they will likely follow later in high school, a shot at the grand prize could make all of the difference between graduating or dropping out.

In order to keep my students motivated I am requesting an iPad Mini and two iPod Shuffles as fantastic prizes for my positive reward system.

Your help will ensure that these students succeed and become one less statistic in the drop out rate.
