Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Poetry is a window to the soul, and my students have a great deal to express! I teach 10th grade in an urban school in New York City. The school is 90% Hispanic and 100% of the students receive free lunch due to financial need. A third of my class is special education. My students are truly dynamic and posses a great deal of intellectual curiosity. However, most don't have the background to express themselves in a creative manner. We have no trees outside our school, nor other nature to stimulate our imaginations. In fact, we lack even a single window to be inspired by the outside world. Creativity is necessary as they develop their identity and eventually enhance their learning in college. This resource will be their inspiration and the poetry project will help them express themselves as individuals and realize how much they can accomplish.

It all started when a student said, "this would be a lot easier to learn if it had rhyme or was a song." I realized the kids had a love for song lyrics, and I want them to transfer this love to poetry. Our school has no core poetry books, and budget cuts have eliminated our ability to purchase new titles. All I need is a hook to wet their appetites, and I know I can capture their minds and show them how poetry is the medium they need to express all the emotions in their heads.

The novel Bronx Masquerade deals with a high school teacher in the Bronx who begins to host open-mike poetry in his classroom on Fridays which allows his students to find a forum to express their identity issues and forge unexpected connections with one another. The book alternates between vignettes and poetry which will appeal to the students in my class. My students will desire to emulate the poetry created by the students in the novel. My goal is to read the book with the students and motivate the students to write poetry. This will lead into a poetry unit where we address the theme of IDENTITY, and how poetry can express the myriad components of our identity. I plan on having open-mike Fridays where the students can showcase their writings. This will eventually be done on a larger level in the school cafetorium (we lack a separate auditorium) where students will be invited to listen to my students' creativity and no doubt be inspired to write their own poetry.

When I first read Bronx Masquerade, the metaphorical light bulb above my head nearly burst -- this is the resource I need to show the students how powerful poetry can be in their lives. Beyond writing poetry, this book will show the students how creativity can indeed open up a vast number of opportunities for them. Colleges crave creative minds, and my students need to start seeing things in colors other than back and white. Our open-mike Fridays will also provide the students with skills such as public speaking in front of a large audience. Self confidence is something lacking in many of my student and poetry is the avenue to get many of them to realize just how special they are.
