Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach at a college preparatory charter school in East Las Vegas, serving primarily low-income Latino students. Our school aims to send 100% of its graduating students "to and through college." After a tough pandemic year, all of my seniors are back in the classroom!

My Project

The theme of the course is “FUTURE!!” We will use literature to speculate about the future: will the future be bright or bleak? We will use literature to face our fears and anxieties about the future squarely. We’ll consider the way science fiction as a genre functions as social commentary, using tales of futuristic, dystopian, or fantastical worlds to teach us more about our own.

This theme feels timely because seniors are preparing for their futures and (naturally) harbor some fears and anxieties about the future.

We live in precarious times in which the future is foreboding and bleak. But in many ways the future is bright! What will you make of your future?
