Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

I have the pleasure of teaching around 80 energetic 6th graders in a high-poverty, high-trauma middle school. Many of my students face significant personal obstacles and challenges and therefore school is their safe place.

My students crave stability, love, attention, affirmation, warm smiles and hugs, and they desire to do well in the classroom.

I see them struggling to process their many complicated emotions, but one thing I feel from them daily is love! This drives my desire to be the best possible teacher I can be for them. I want our classroom to be inclusive, engaging, supportive, and to provide experiences they otherwise may not have access to.

My Project

Variety is the spice of life in our classroom! We sing, draw, dance, read, write, act, debate, conduct experiments, and more. Strategically incorporating engaging and effective delivery methods makes a huge impact on their growth and achievement.

Students especially love when technology tools and resources are incorporated into their learning experiences.

They connect with Flocabulary videos and both enjoy and greatly benefit from using computer simulations, watching engaging video clips, using QR codes and other apps, and much more! There would be so much potential for enhanced learning if tablets were at their fingertips! It would provide additional opportunities for individual remediation or enrichment activities, station work, collaboration, and student product enhancement.
