Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our urban public high school is as diverse racially, culturally, and economically as our large metropolitan city.

Our student population is by majority, Hispanic (70%), followed by Asian, White, Black, Pacific Islander, and various other groups.

Almost all my students classify in our state's lowest economic category, which qualifies them for financial assistance such as reduced-price lunch and free tutoring programs. For nearly 50% of my students, the primary language that their family speaks at home is not English. Many of our students were classified as ESL students (English as a Second Language) when they began high school, but have now been reclassified as English Proficient.

Due to funding cuts, science classes at our public high school have recently increased to average sizes of 44 students per class. We are not a private school, so in order to give these young students the best college prep environment, our science lab programs truly survive from donations and grants.

My Project

An important skill in the study of Chemistry is to predict and calculate freezing points, melting points, and boiling points of chemicals based on their formulas and structure. A melt station is much like a giant microscope specialized for Chemistry. But, even better, some melt stations have the capability to link with computer probes. As you may read in some of my other donation requests, for several years now, thanks to DonorsChoose, I have been modernizing the lab experience for my AP Chemistry & Chemistry students by providing them with Vernier computer-linked lab probe equipment.

Now I hope to provide my classes with a Vernier computer-linked melt station, so that students will be able to observe different substances in real time as they melt, while the time and the temperature data is logged and stored by a computer.

Our current computer probes are much like your doctor's office digital thermometers or blood pressure instruments. The ones we currently have allow for students to measure temperature, pH, and electrical conductivity. Five years ago, a local university donated 20 used iMac computers to my class. And soon, when COVID-19 ends, students will return to a newly constructed Chemistry lab. I hope to have a melt station to be used in the new lab.

The melt station will greatly benefit our developing science lab for my students. Students will be able to take measurements more easily and to spend their time concentrating on predicting and analyzing their data graphically, thereby developing analysis skills that are crucial for colleges and careers in science. And of course, students will enjoy operating computer science probes. Anything you can donate to this project will be shared by my AP, Honors, and General Chemistry students and would be greatly appreciated.
