Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Thomas Edison once said, "Our greatest weakness lies in giving up. The most certain way to succeed is always to try just one more time." Our students are exposed to thought provoking and inspirational quotes through "Quote of the Week".
I co-teach in a Title 1 school in New York which means that at least 40 percent of the students came from low income families.
Our classroom is a mix of general education and special education students along with English Language Learners. Our students came into our classroom already fighting a difficult battle academically and socially. These students have struggles that we can never fully comprehend. We strive to make our classroom a community where they are safe, valued and respected. A haven where they are engaged academically and inspired to succeed despite their struggles. Although our students are on varied levels in their academics, one place where everyone has been able to participate fully has been our, "Quote of the Week". Our intention was for our students to be inspired and motivated to learn despite their challenges. Every week students are encouraged to think about how what the quote of the week applies to their life and what they have learned from the quote.
My Project
Each week winner or winners are selected that truly capture the essence of the quote. Their submissions are shared with the class and then they write the quote to create a border on our classroom wall. Originally, we began selecting the quotes ourselves and then students began independently researching quotes and submitting them. For the first time this week, we have an original quote from one of our students. We hoped but never imagined the response and enthusiasm that we have received from our students! As you probably know, teachers live for these moments and as first year teachers we are especially grateful to have experienced this. Our hope is that you will fund our project so that we can do an end of the year activity with the students. We would like the students to create a book of quotes. They will select the quotes that are especially meaningful to them and enter them into their book. They will then personalize the book with the art supplies requested.
Creating these books will allow them to revisit our quotes and reflect on their meaning.
It will also serve as a lasting memento of our classroom but more importantly it will be a book of their own creation. It will be a book that when times invariably get tough, they can read and be inspired to push through. A book that will remind them everyday, never to give up and that their circumstances and challenges do not have to define them. This book is not just for today but for their lifetime.
