My Students
Many of the students in my classes struggle with reading. They work diligently every day in an attempt to achieve grade level reading skills. This is made even more difficult by the conditions in which they live.
Most of the students in my classes come from low-income homes and many are ELL students.
Because of their low level of reading, they don't enjoy the process and the struggle continues. My goal, as a reading and Language Arts teacher, is to not only help my students achieve grade-level reading skills but also to help them develop a love of reading.
My Project
My kids love using Lexia, the reading program we use to help improve reading skills at the high school level. All of the student computers in our classroom are about ten years old and take precious learning time from students who wish to have quick access to the program. At the beginning of the school year, we had a project for a laptop fund. This has been helpful for students to quickly get on the internet, but has also shown us how slow the other computers really are. We hope to add one computer at a time so more students can make the most of the time available to them for this reading program.
