This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My school district has over 15,000 students with large numbers of Hispanic, Middle Eastern, Asian, Filipino, and Polish students. There are 51 different languages spoken at home, and we are a suburban school district surrounded by urban school districts. We pride ourselves on offering many opportunities for our students so they can grow academically, athletically, emotionally, and socially.
The National Center for Education Statistics [2016] attributed living in poverty during early childhood, in part, to education-related deficiencies, inadequacies with physical & cognitive development, and disparities regarding access to healthcare.
These students are 5x more likely to drop out and 13 times less likely to graduate high school on time. Over 50% of our students live in poverty, but adding a positive school-based relationship & additional external motivation can greatly increase the desire to achieve.
With over 3,500 students, we offer 25 varsity sports and 3 varsity academic competition teams, including our FIRST Robotics Team - FRC3314 - The Mechanical Mustangs, of which I am the lead mentor. Part of the FIRST Mid-Atlantic District, we are competing in Destination Deep Space, sponsored by Boeing. Our 5 ft, 125 lb robot has won numerous engineering awards and qualified for the FIRST Championship.
My Project
Our FIRST Robotics Team 3314, the Mechanical Mustangs, has been working incredibly hard to become a Chairman's Award winning team. The Chairman's Award is the most prestigious award at FIRST, it honors the team that best represents a model for other teams to emulate and best embodies the purpose and goals of FIRST.
FIRST's mission is to encourages tomorrow's problem-solvers by empower kids to be young leaders and change-makers and making hands-on STEM programs more widely available to under-served students across the country and throughout the world.
The Mechanical Mustangs have been vital in inspiring many new teams around the country and by hosting tournaments two programs in the FIRST progression of programs: FIRST LEGO League and FIRST LEGO League Jr.
This project is for additional toner for certificate picture frames for the awards given out at our FIRST LEGO League NJ Qualifying Tournaments that we host. We give out 36 awards and inspire over 100 teams [1,000 students] from around NJ.
As an FRC team, we work hard to build up the middle and elementary school programs within our district and around our community. We also help to bring on new teams around the state, country, and world. We will be using all of these supplies to directly inspire young people to become science and technology leaders. Thank you for becoming our partner in this mission.
