Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are energetic 3rd graders who love morning meeting activities and listening to good books. More than 80% come from economically disadvantaged families in the densely populated South Philadelphia neighborhood surrounding the school.
At home, my students speak languages including Spanish, Khmer, Nepali, Burmese, and Vietnamese.
Most are still in the process of learning English. We have a collaborative classroom culture in which children have frequent opportunities to discuss ideas with each other. They have so many ideas and questions about the world!
My Project
My students come from places including Philadelphia, Mexico, and Nepal. They read at a number of levels and have different passions and preferences.
Regardless of these personal variations, they all love to read and discuss books.
I want to make sure that they have books that give them the opportunity to read about determined and talented figures from around the world including Frida Kahlo, Harriet Tubman, Mae Jemison, Sylvia Mendez, Ruth Bader Ginsburg, and Jean-Michel Basquiat. Some of the books will be read aloud to the whole class, and all will be available for students to read individually or with a buddy in the classroom library. The more up-to-date and engaging the selections, the more meaningful and productive the reading practice will be!
