Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
My students in creative writing are struggling readers and writers, and also executive function. We write a journal together every class, and I would love to provide them with the journal that they can keep and take with them on the last day of school to keep all their writing from the entire year (plus composition notebooks are easy for them to keep track of!) Additionally, our Fridays will be spent reading from anthologies of diverse authors to show my students that people who look like them and sound like them, and come from the same background can also be talented. This will hopefully hold a mirror up for them and show the ways in which they can also be talented.
They need inspiration, and a model of good writing to become better writers themselves.
These books, and the journals to keep their daily writing, will hopefully build in them the idea that reading and writing are not right answer/wrong answer skills and that their talents and specifically their creativity can lie within these domains even if they have been resistant to see their own success in them.
