Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are amazing! As a Middle School Art Teacher, many of my students are being exposed to art for the first time. These students are excited to see what they can make and where their creativity can take them. Those that have had art before are looking for new and enriching experiences to develop their skills while those that are new to art are excited to experiment with new materials.
In order to keep students interested in the arts, we must give them the opportunity to set their creativity free and express themselves in a variety of ways.
Many of the students I work with come from low income families that are unable to purchase art materials for the home. My art class is their opportunity to experience these materials and develop their expressive and creative sides.
My Project
At an age when students are at odds with knowing who they really are and where they fit into the world, they can have a hard time expressing exactly who they see themselves to be. Students are being labeled everywhere they turn by parents, teachers, and even friends. It is too easy for students to succumb to the expectations of others and forget how they see themselves.
In this project, students will step outside their comfort zone to create a two-sided self portrait.
Students will need to reflect on who they see themselves to be on the inside versus who others see them to be and express this through representational drawing, abstract color patterns, and design choices. After students create their dual representations, they will look at the work of another student and create a story reflecting the student's personality as portrayed through their art. Through this project, students will explore the versatile use of Marabu Art Crayons, Acetate paper, mixed media processes, and creative story telling.
