Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our school has one-to-one Chromebooks for students. The technology is great for supplementing learning. However, these devices are limited in their capacity.
My students are low-income, English learners.
They do not have many opportunities for experiences that require a higher technology level.
Many of my students are on free and reduced price lunch and many of their families do not speak English. Some are sharing houses with multiple families or are homeless, but all are eager to learn more about technologies and how to use them.
My Project
ESports is exploding internationally as the next big thing. ESports are multiplayer competitive video games, typically played by professional gamers. There is a new market forming with professional level teams, tournaments, and real salaries to the players. There are currently ESports programs at the local university but there are not any at our high schools or middle schools. Another teacher in my district and I started esports clubs at our schools and they are so popular I don't have enough computers for all the students interested! Not only is it motivating the students to show up to club - and school!- but also to maintain high grades to stay on the team!
I would love to give my students the opportunity to be competitive in the quest for the ESports scholarship money at our local university.
In order to do that, my students need technology capable of processing the high-quality graphics and content heavy load speeds of most ESports games. I am requesting Acer's Predator Helios 300 laptops. These are very highly rated for graphics and processing speeds. I am also requesting SteelSeries mice and headsets so that the students have optimal control and communication ability.
Through ESports, our students will gain life skills such as cooperation, resiliency, strategic decision making, and effective communication. They will have fun while learning and even have a shot at going to a college they could otherwise not afford. The ESports scholarships are an amazing opportunity for many students who do not thrive in traditional sports. With this new technology, my students will have so many doors opened to them.
