Inquisitive Minds Need Appropriate Leveled Reading Materials
My students need to keep up with current events with Scholastic News subscriptions at their appropriate reading levels.
FULLY FUNDED! Mrs. Ikeda's classroom raised $430

My Students
My classroom is filled with 9 students who are eager to learn. They do not have the academic skills necessary to be in a general education classroom. Instead, they are in a fully self-contained classroom which teaches life skills through classroom instruction as well as community based activities.
Our school is a small school of 800 students.
We are a Title 1 school. I have 9 very inquisitive, eager to learn, fun and energetic students. I teach 9-12 grade but my students range in age from 15-20 years old. My students work towards a Certificate of Completion and we concentrate on helping them to be successful, contributing adults post high school. We work on academics such as reading and math in both the classroom as well as in the community. They participate in community based instruction activities such as working at various job sites, shopping for groceries, cooking, banking, learning how to navigate to various sites using the bus, etc.
My Project
My students read at the Kindergarten to 4th grade level. Being at a high school it is very difficult to find appropriate reading material. With the Scholastic subscriptions we will be able to bring current events as well as science and math into our classroom. I want my students to be excited about reading and to have something fun, yet educational to read. Our classroom library is now filled with books that have been given to us from various people, although we are very grateful to them some are very outdated or not at their appropriate reading level.
If my students are given the opportunity to read about events, history, science and math at a level that they are able to understand, I think it will engage them and get them excited about reading.
This will in turn increase their reading levels which will assist them in all areas of school and life.
