My Students
My students attend a Title 1 school in NC. I found that it is much easier to teach my 7th graders if they are physically grappling with the material. Through labs, my students have learned to recognize the importance of the scientific method and a science education.
My students are inquisitive 7th graders on the Honors Team at the Title One school in which I teach.
This means that they are on grade level in both math and language arts. However, my students have not been exposed to an Honors science class and sometimes struggle with the pace and content. Despite this, my students come into class everyday possessing the desire the learn more about science. I try to keep my class as engaging as possible to distract my students from their issues outside the classroom.
My Project
In NC, the best science curriculum falls into the hands of the 7th grade science teacher. The curriculum is perfectly designed for an inquiry based teaching style that invigorates the 12-13 year old mind. I think that we all remember the first time that we dissected an animal. My students will have already dissected a frog as the introduction to our Human Body Unit. Dissecting a fetal pig will culminate our human body unit and will allow for my students to make complex comparisons between the anatomy of humans, pigs, and frogs. Aside from this, dissecting a fetal pig will set my students up for success when they reach high school biology.
I try every day to expose my students to new learning experiences that even I didn't get as a 7th grader.
I want my students to leave my class recognizing the importance of learning science through inquiry. Dissecting fetal pigs is a perfect way of showing my students the power behind asking questions and then seeking answers.
