This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
You’ll never meet a better group of kids than the ones that I teach. My students demonstrated the concept “Houston Strong” by their resilience after the devastating effects of hurricane Harvey. Some of my students just moved out of shelters into hotels because their homes are still being repaired.
We have a large population of students who are considered “at risk.” However, they come to school ready to learn daily.
They struggle to read and that makes science difficult. However they are ready to explore the world of science and it is quickly becoming their favorite subject.
My Project
In science class, I have taught my students to become curious about their natural world and ask well-defined questions. The students research the answers to their questions and investigate or create models to increase their knowledge of things that interest them. This action motivates the students to continue learning. For example, while we were studying reflection and refraction, we researched and found that a periscope has both characteristics of light. Students used various objects at home and created models of periscopes for use in class.
All good scientists begin their investigation with a question and research.
My students need Chromebooks to begin the investigative process. They have learned to ask well defined questions and research to help launch investigations about their world. They love to research models and create new models. My scholars desire to become doctors, engineers and scientists. These resources will help them in their pursuits.
