My Students
"The process of scientific discovery is, in effect, a continual flight from wonder." Albert Einstein knew that all great science stems from that initial awe of the unexplainable. Help our students jump-start their flights into this discovery by improving our nonfiction classroom library!
My students are a brilliant mix of many cultures, socioeconomic levels, and ability levels.
They are brought together in this urban setting to learn from each other and share their diverse experiences. Despite these many distinctions, we are truly a community; a place where teachers know the names of all students and help to foster their creativity, critical thinking, and love of learning.
My Project
My students lack science and other nonfiction texts to stimulate their awe of the natural world. With these new texts, my students will have access to a whole world of interesting and engaging topics right from our classroom. I believe that students who have choice over what they read will read more. We have almost an hour a day for reading workshop, and this equals many opportunities for students to be inspired by scientific topics. Students will have the opportunity to learn together by picking topics of study and working with partners or groups to research a topic of interest. Without these books, options are extremely limited and many students may feel frustrated that they can not study what they are interested in. Further into the year, students will be doing research reports and with these resources their choices are doubled. Students will learn about the natural world around them, about biology, geography and the infinite world of astrology.
By donating to this project, you will give children who may not have many books in their homes, the opportunity to explore the world around them through narrative and expository writing and beautiful illustrations in these books.
We can impact these young people by allowing them the freedom to explore and follow their curiosity into unknown topics and ideas.
