My Students
Did you know that honeybees can be trained to detect explosives? Or that an ant can carry 50 times its body weight? I want my students to read nonfiction books and discover inquiry learning.
I've been teaching highly capable students for the last five years and one thing that puzzles me is their lack of reading nonfiction.
To address this issue, I am requiring a weekly PROBE: Personal Research on Basically Everything. Students pick a topic of interest, read/research the topic and write a short report with an illustration.
To motivate my students, I need outstanding science trade books. I found a list of award winning trade books from the National Science Teachers Association and carefully selected books that I thought would interest my students.
My Project
These books will be available in my classroom for students to use for their weekly PROBE. Because I selected hardbound books when available, the materials can be used over and over by students this year and for years to come. I believe these books will create an excitement in the classroom for nonfiction.
Your donation will help my students improve both their reading and writing skills, increase their science content and encourage them to possibly choose a science career in the future.
