Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students' families struggle. We are a 95% free lunch community. In addition, we are a small, public, neighborhood school, so our building does not always get the funding and resources it needs to support our students in comparison to the larger schools in the district.
My students are smart, creative, and motivated.
Their families work hard and want their children to have opportunities that only an good education can provide. I want to provide every opportunity I can to make that happen for my students.
My Project
My students are asked to perform throughout the school year at a reading level that, often times, exceeds their June expected growth. Regardless, they must persevere and work through challenging texts. In order to build that fluency and vocabulary, I incorporate independent reading in every class. I have quite a library of fiction texts and they have done an amazing job of building their comprehension and fluency throughout the year!
Narrative Nonfiction is a genre that students will need a great deal of familiarity navigating in order to show their comprehension.
In order for students to meet the required standards of today, my students need narrative nonfiction books to demonstrate the close, attentive reading that is needed when navigating the informational texts.
The days of dry writing with clear scientific, historic, and technical writing is over. Students are asked to navigate through this information as it is presented in a narrative context. They are being asked to pull out important facts and data, make inferences, and locate supporting details in this genre. They need all the practice they can get! This type of reading is what is expected for success as my students grow and develop their skills for the modern world!
