Inquiring into STEM Education

My students need consumable lab supplies for inquiry based STEM oriented experiments utilizing Vernier Probes that were purchased through a grant last year.

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My goal is to turn this year's chemistry students into a group of strong independent learners. I am making them design their own labs and stressing the importance of intrinsic reward over extrinsic. I'm making them apply their learning in hands-on activities instead of multiple choice tests.

Following taking Chemistry this year, students will not be required to take any additional science classes.

Hopefully their experience this year will motivate them to the higher level elective sciences offered to them. Our school is a Title 1 school with nearly 50% of students on free or reduced lunch. We are a high poverty, urban school, yet have a diverse range of socioeconomic backgrounds. We strive to achieve high API scores yearly, meeting our goal of 800+. We have a strong community presence, with an active Alumni Association composed of significant community members. This year I am embracing the NGSS and Common Core Standards by pushing my students in inquiry based lessons and self designed labs. Many students have had little exposure to in depth science lab activities prior to taking my class. I intend to expose them to college level labs, to make them college bound and college ready for careers in STEM.

My Project

We were able to write a grant last year and purchase a class set of Vernier probes and Google Chromebooks. The probes are amazing and offer endless opportunities for investigation and experimentation. They were a huge expense. In order to use them to their full potential, we will need to purchase consumable chemicals yearly. This shopping list is a full set of chemicals for 5 chemistry classes for an entire year. Some of the labs they will be able to do are: -determining the concentration of solution -using freezing point depression to find molecular weight -titration curves of weak acids and bases -determining the phosphoric acid content of soft drinks Each lab requires a set of students to use several chemicals (8 groups x 5 periods = 40 sets of consumable products). These chemicals are expensive and are not reusable year to year. For example, the titration curve lab uses 4 separate chemicals costing $100. The students will be unable to do the lab without the chemicals.

STEM, technology, inquiry - these are more than just buzz words.

They are the future of science education and science careers. My goal is to incite a passion for science and create a classroom of independent problem solvers. I want my students to move on, not being college bound, but college ready. They need to start doing things to better their education, not for the points, but for the intrinsic reward of learning and knowing they will be better set for the future.
