My Students

I teach in a high poverty public school. My students come to me with varying abilities, attitudes, and backgrounds. Our classroom is authentic, supportive, rigorous, and engaging. Every student in my classroom has a unique voice and everyone in the room must respect it.

It is my belief that all children are capable of learning if strongly supported and encouraged with love and enthusiasm.

I believe if a teacher creates a learning environment with high expectations of achievement that is supported by the school and community, students will develop a positive attitude and begin to perform to and beyond the expectations despite any challenges they may face.

Creating a community is essential to taking risks and deeper learning. I care about my students and they know it.

I push my students to meet and go beyond my high expectations even though they may have been conditioned to believe they cannot meet them. Taking time to know my students, not just as learners, but also as people has helped to create a sense of belonging in each student. No matter what obstacles they face, they strive to be their best every day!

My Project

When I first started teaching in my school, I was completely gung ho on doing STEM (science, technology, engineering, mathematics) activities and thought my students would be too! To my surprise, the open-endedness and creative flexibility was daunting to them. They were so used to step-by-step directions and doing things by the book. Eventually, we got past that and they began to love STEM and the hands-on, minds-on approach. However, this was a process each year, with each new class. For the 2020-2021 school year, I will be taking on a new adventure. I will be teaching 4-6th grade science and social studies. Every student in these grades, I have had as third graders, so they have been put through my crazy STEM projects. In third grade, we used inexpensive, easy-to-get items such as straws, popsicle sticks, junk drawer items, etc. I would really love to have updated items for my students to use!

STEM enhances students' critical thinking skills and pushes them to become innovative thinkers.

It also helps students realize how science, technology, engineering, and mathematics all come together. These are all skills that are needed in our world today. STEM is so important (and awesome) because it promotes experimentation, encourages teamwork, builds resilience, teaches problem-solving, and more. Along with being able to do more projects and activities, my students would love to be able to have these items for morning work, centers, and if they finish work early.
