My Students

Teachers ask students to try new things all the time. Although trying something new can make us feel unsure because we are going out of our comfort zone--it's fun to be part of a learning adventure! I'm trying something new year with my three 4th grade reading classes: Flexible seating!

Flexible seating arrangements give students the autonomy to choose from a variety of seating options so they can work to the best of their ability.

Giving students choice is incredibly powerful because it communicates that we trust them to guide their own learning. I imagine a classroom where we've thrown off the traditional expectations for learning--sitting in hard chairs with everyone assigned to a boring desk--for a more innovative approach to learning to love reading.

My Project

If adults dislike sitting at a desk all day long...why would we ask 9 year olds to do it? I'm very excited to offer this year's students an opportunity to get comfy while learning. The materials I've asked for will help them improve posture, facilitate collaborative learning, and gain autonomy as learners on a self-guided journey. Students will be able to choose their seats on a daily basis and we'll have a system to make sure seating arrangements are equitably shared. After the reading lesson where everyone sits on the rug facing me for instruction, students will grab their reader's notebook and leveled independent reading books to begin work in the spot they have chosen for the day. Student A may work at a lap desk sitting on a bean bag chair and student B might be at the guided reading table with me on a balance ball. Students C and D might be reading to each other to improve fluency using the "surf" seat/desk. These options take away the traditional approach to reading instruction while invigorating my classroom.

Most of us learned to love reading when we were inspired by a teacher who showed us that reading was not a chore but an adventure.

Imagine yourself a reluctant reader who walks into a classroom with desks and chairs lined up facing the all-knowing teacher. Now imagine a classroom with balance balls, bean bag chairs, a couch, and pillows to sit on! Which environment would inspire you to give reading a good try? Help me make a difference in a reader's life by giving them a unique classroom experience.
