I believe that photography is a medium that many of my students have not had the opportunity to explore. I am always looking for incredible opportunities to extend my students thinking and learning. I believe photography will challenge and enhance their minds in new and different ways.
I teach Gifted and Talented fourth and fifth graders in a self-contained classroom.
I believe in using our community resources and work hard to develop partnerships with area organizations. My students are thoughtful, confident and inquisitive. They embrace new ideas and situations and are willing to take risks. They are supportive of each other and love to work cooperatively. My students are caring and culturally aware. They are receiving an International Project Based, Mastery Education. They take Chinese class three times a week and are involved in many non-traditional educational experiences.
My school is located in Columbus. Our school population is about 93% free and reduced price lunch. We have a very culturally diverse student population and our students come from all socioeconomic backgrounds. The staff and students at our school are so excited about developing this new Mastery Program and learning together using our newly provided technology and resources.
My Project
My students will use this photography equipment to design and create the newsletter for our newly developed school. They will be in charge or recording the grade level projects, field trips and performances, as well as the community partnerships and new school program development.
My students will use the photography medium to develop our yearly theme of Living History. First we will organize the many archival photos and records that were found in our historic school as we were cleaning out to move into the building. Students will have the opportunity to travel to a local university to meet with the professor of photography and get some tips on making their own photographs more memorable. I will also take them to the our cities Art Museum and allow them to view the current photography exhibit. We will then discuss what makes a photo great and photograph the school as it is today. Finally, we will design a permanent display showing the history of our school community.
I believe the use of photography will critically enhance my students' educational experience and give them a new creative way to develop their many ideas.
I know that this endeavor will enhance our school community and benefit all the students in our school and my future classes. I know that any time I give my students new, innovative outlets, I further develop their creative abilities and ways to express themselves. The skills to use photography and technology will enhance their futures.
