My Students

I am a teacher of gifted and talented students in the city of Richmond, Virginia. The gifted and talented program is called SPACE which means Special Programs for Academic and Creative Excellence and it is designed to challenge students who are working above their current grade level.

Although many of my students come from challenging backgrounds, they have shown that they can overcome obstacles that make life difficult and demonstrate that they are intelligent, inquisitive and industrious.

They often challenge me with questions about the world around them and I enjoy leading them to the answers in such a way that makes them responsible for their own learning. We are a community of learners and problem solvers. Students love to collaborate on ideas that lead to gaining new information and ultimately the creation of a finished product. The production of something tangible is always the goal. This may come in the form of a report, a photo display, a video or the creation of a brand new invention. My students are an inspiration to me because they are the future and they are forward thinking people.

My Project

As a teacher of gifted and talented students, most of my lessons are project based. I encourage students to have something tangible at the end of the unit. Since my students will be learning virtually this semester it will not be possible for them to collaborate as they typically would. I am currently in the process of redesigning my lessons so that they can be presented in a virtual format. In order for my students to participate they will need materials at home to help facilitate the learning. I would like to be able to provide these materials to each student in my group.

Students will have a great deal of screen time this semester, I hope to make that time more valuable and engaging with the use of these STEM projects.

The projects that I am ordering will enable my students to think creatively and create projects that may be designated by the kits or they can become innovators of their own inventions. Students will incorporate science concepts such as simple machines, compound machines and robotics into the mechanics of the STEM projects. Mathematical concepts of measuring, comparing distances and probability are also an integral part of the learning process. When students are engaged in their learning, it becomes more effective. I would like to give my students the opportunity for hands-on learning while learning at home. Donations to this project will provide students with materials that would be difficult for families to purchase and you will be contributing to the next generation of great thinkers.
