Every morning I start the day by asking, "What are we going to do today?" Students reply, "Learn something new today!" In our Social Studies class, there are many geography, civic, history, and economic skills we learn during the year. The challenge is finding exciting ways to learn these skills.
I teach at a Title 1, STEM school in Georgia.
My classroom consists of 24 students who come from a variety of backgrounds and have many different learning styles. Last year, in first grade, our learning was filled with fun, excitement, and exploration. As we all move to second grade together, we want to continue this tradition. My students require learning activities that do not solely rely on our textbooks. They are inquisitive learners who thrive when presented with hands-on activities and challenges.
My Project
My second graders will enjoy learning and practicing their cardinal directions with student compasses. We can take our learning outside the four walls of our classroom for treasure hunts and scavenger hunts all while practicing directions including intermediate directions. The Geography skills match-ups will also help my students learn their map skills. The play money kit will allow my students an opportunity to see economics in action as we take part in buying, selling, and saving activities. Finally the leveled readers and fact and opinion game will allow for more learning opportunities to practice and study the many skills we will focus on in Social Studies.
With these supplies, my students will be more excited during Social Studies and more eager to learn these necessary skills.
They will master skills such as map skills and economic skills. We will not be tied to our Social Studies books this year, but instead we will get to take part in relevant learning activities.
