Innovation and Literature

Help me give my students a set of STEAM related texts for grades K-2, a set of STEAM related texts for grades 3-5, and a new EV3 brick (and its components).

FULLY FUNDED! Mrs. Overstreet's classroom raised $612

My Students

My students are inquisitive, creative, and enjoy being challenged. They love collaboratively working on projects and tasks, but especially love using technology! Using the appropriate tools in order to meet their academic needs motivates them to learn more and allows them to become who they want to be, which is paramount to all of our success.

As Queen Raina of Jordan states, "In education, technology can be a life changer, a game changer, for kids who are both in school and out of school.

Technology can bring textbooks to life. The Internet can connect students to their peers in other parts of the world. It can bridge the quality gaps."

My students live in a low-income area, within a city district that is in transition. With that being said, funding is limited and used towards human capital and basic supplies. While these items are extremely important, my students are in need of additional, technology-based, supplies that are not readily available.

My Project

These STEAM book sets will continue to enhance the print-rich classroom that I strive to create. My classroom library is a place that my students really enjoy-they complete work there on the carpet, they read independently, and they design and create innovative solutions to presented real-life problems! Every student book that is placed in my library is treated with love and care, and they are thankful for the opportunities to read. All of these books have been chosen with my students in mind. Students will be able to choose books, which will help them continue to enjoy independent reading during STEAM class.

“The more that you read, the more things you will know.

The more that you learn, the more places you’ll go.” - Dr. Seuss

In addition to the sets of books, the replacement Lego EV3 brick (or brain to the Lego Robot) and its components will allow my students to continue to compete in the world-wide FLL Robotics program. "When students are engaged in hands-on STEM experiences, they build confidence, grow their knowledge, and develop habits of learning." (http://www.firstlegoleague.org/about-fll). Learning coding, problem solving skills, team work, compromise, and "gracious professionalism" are all important life skills necessary for my students' futures.

The best way to increase reading ability is to read more, and these books will continue to help my students grow stronger in reading while supporting the STEAM topics into which we are diving. My students already have shown an astonishing interest in independently reading books about the STEAM challenges we are working on in class, and this project will only help enrich their experiences with the printed word.
