Inner City Kids with Autism Need Visuals To Learn

My students need 2 digital cameras to help them learn and 5 easels to help things be presented at eye level.

My Students

Visuals are key to helping students with autism learn. In addition, students with autism often respond well to having their materials presented to them at eye level to help improve their visual attention to task.

My students attend an inner city public school in Massachusetts that has over 75 students with autism spectrum disorder.

There are 8 substantially separate classrooms for students with autism at my school. My school is working hard to improve their inclusion program.

My Project

Individuals with autism respond well to visuals to help them learn, but since they are concrete learners, they respond better to actual digital pictures as opposed to cartoon pictures/drawings. We have one digital camera to share among our program and over 11 staff members who need to use the camera on a routine basis for teaching their students. Many times lessons and teaching moments are put on hold as a result of the camera not being available. This is extremely frustrating for the staff members at our school as they feel as though they cannot accomplish the things that they would like to in a timely fashion. Some of the children have a hard time engaging in tasks presented at the table top as they may have a difficult time attending and staying in their seat. I only have a couple easels and they are on loan to some of my students who need them, making it difficult for me to explore with additional students on whether they would benefit from an easel as well.

Your donation will allow the staff at my school to be more productive with their time by having more cameras available.

The cameras will then allow for the teachers to use the proper digital visuals that the students need to be able to learn and access the curriculum. In addition, your donation will allow for the hard work that the teachers put into the their materials to be presented in a proper incline to certain children with autism that are in need.
