Inner City Freshman Get Hands-on Experiences Being Microbiologists

Help me give my students agar plates to culture bacteria and learn basics of microbiology. We need gloves to stay safe! I would love for them to have an exciting & motivating activity to start the year off!

My Project

I teach biology in an amazing school where most of my students are freshmen. My students come from the most diverse cultural, economic, and language backgrounds from about 50 elementary schools. Freshman year is a huge transition where many students either set the path for success or immediately fall behind and are off track to graduate.

To start our freshman year, I would love my students to have hands-on lab experiences with microbiology and the scientific process.

This would motivate them to invest in their high school science experience and have a successful start.

Students will use agar plates to culture bacteria and learn some basics of microbiology. We also need gloves to stay safe!

Because our students come from so many different elementary schools, they have vastly different levels of knowledge and past experience in science. These hands-on lab materials will motivate them to be interested in biology and our class, especially if their elementary science experience was lacking. I also teach diverse learners and English language learners, so hands-on materials are essential for this vulnerable population. As their freshman-year teacher, it is vital to me to help all of my students set their path to success in high school.
