Help me give my students design and implement book clubs at the middle school level as part of their initiative to engage readers with this wonderful story about adapting in "The Benefits of Being an Octopus."

My Students

Our students are hardworking individuals from a diverse community who deserve to see themselves in the texts they read. They get excited when a character has a similar background to their own. Being able to relate to a character because of those traits or because of context really allows the students to build the meta-cognition needed to develop a greater understanding of the world around them.

Diversity in literature will diversify our learners' experiences further, thus building a stronger foundation of community.

Our students deserve to understand one another more and these books will do that.

My Project

As part of our ProjectLIT Book Club, our goal is to reach out to younger readers with diverse literature they will love discussing. We have selected Anne Braden's "The Benefits of Being an Octopus" for the upcoming school year.

As our high school students design lessons for their younger cohorts, they will draw on comparisons of the main character, the adaptive lifestyle of the octopus, and build an empathetic community that focuses on building each other up.

The culmination of this planning will result in student-led discourse about the themes of the book in at least one of our feeder schools.
