Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students have a love for learning, exploration, creativity, and full participation in their school activities.
My students experience difficulties with fine motor skills (ex: writing, cutting, tool use), tolerance for sensory input (also known as sensory integration skills), social participation, attention, and organization skills.
Schools recognize the importance of positive behavioral supports and preventative strategies to foster a positive school climate and high student achievement. In Occupational Therapy, students learn sensory and motor skills to maximize engagement in school occupations.
Additionally, classroom environments are adapted to accommodate the needs of students with special needs.
Tools commonly used include textured fidgets, weighted vests, and active-sitting surfaces. These promote relaxation and focus, by reducing students' desire to leave their seat, touch items unrelated to the lesson, or converse with peers. They help them be more mindful of the task at hand.
My Project
The Individualized Education Program, also called the IEP, is a document that is developed for each public school child who requires special education. IEP's are created collaboratively by the child's therapist, teacher, and parents/guardians. It describes the accommodations and goals set for the child during the school year.
The IEP is printed and provided to parents.
Additionally, goals are graded and printed for each report card period, for parents to receive as progress reports.
In addition to printing IEP Documents, the Occupational Therapy department utilizes ink to print handwriting and cutting worksheets, and visual aids for learning.
Ink to print these documents will allow the team to work together to improve educational results for children with disabilities. It will also appreciably expand the students' ability to engage and succeed in class.
