My students are avid writers! We love reading and telling stories, including narratives, poetry, and research reports.
Imagine a classroom with students writing, organizing, sharing, and researching.
This is only possible when scholars are provided with necessary tools. Having the tools allows them to focus on what matters: learning, investigating, and creating.
I work in a large district in a public school in California. Our school has much diversity. We are proud that despite being part of a low-achieving district on standardized tests, our school is a "California Distinguished School" because our students receive high test scores every year. Unfortunately, low performing schools get more money for supplies and books than we do. Therefore, our students rely heavily on their parents and teachers to provide the necessary tools.
My Project
Every year, I purchase ink cartridges for my students. Students get so much intrinsic value when they see their writing published and are able to create or add images to their stories. I was able to get a printer for my classroom several years ago in order to give my students access to printing documents. However, it has been a financial difficulty to keep up with the purchasing of ink cartridges required of our printer.
This year alone, my students engaged in writing and publishing (printing) haikus, narratives, creative stories, compare and contrast essays, and various research reports. They are currently working on a creation of their own myth, relating to the myths of Native Americans. They will display their tepee models alongside their created myth on Open House day for their parents to view. I am hoping to get more ink cartridges by then so my students can type and publish their writing pieces.
Please consider donating ink cartridges so that my students can have access to print out their writing pieces.
It is important to keep the excitement of writing alive, and I have found that the ability to choose font styles and sizes, formatting and editing, then publishing very much keeps that excitement alive. This is easily done through journals. Thank you for considering our requests.
