Greetings, I am the only English has a new language teacher in my school located in central Harlem. It is a Title 1 school which serves many students in temporary housing, English language learners and/ or students with disabilities. This year I teach 45 students from grades K to 5 mostly from Spanish-speaking, Arabic-speaking, West African dialect speaking countries and sometimes French or Russian speaking countries.
What I love about teaching my students is being able to see their growth throughout the year from speaking, reading, and writing little to no English to then towards the end of the year being able to express themselves in complete thoughts and ideas in those modalities.
For most of my students I begin with teaching foundational skills to learn how to read due to educational gaps so that they can then read independently to learn academic content. We have a rich ELA curriculum, however many of the texts resources in it often need additional scaffolding or differentiation for my English language learners to comprehend the content. I create individualized materials to support my students’ learning in their respective classrooms. Creating resources consumes a lot of ink and because of that I need support maintaining printing supplies for my students’ academic success. I often supplement and replace classroom materials with my personal funds due to limited funding for ink supplies. Thank you for your partnership!
