Infusing Technology to Inspire Spanish Language Acquisition
My students need Chromebooks for a paperless classroom. The World Language Department doesn’t have access to technology. Implementing this drive for technology will advance our students' interest and awareness for our already technologically driven society.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Our school is an Title I elementary school. Our teachers work diligently with an approach to education which encompasses innovative teaching methods and inspiring academic achievement. We instill rigorous academics and prepare students to be "College and Career Ready!" One of our many priorities is to close the achievement gap by inspiring our scholars to be community leaders and global competitors.
This year I have the pleasure of working with scholars in our middle school.
It is my duty to inspire our students - not only to educate them in language acquisition, but to instill in them the value of education, in hopes that they understand that their circumstances will not define who they are. I am teaching approximately 315 students who come from diverse cultural backgrounds, are bilingual, and receive free or reduced priced lunch.
My Project
Students should want to come to school eager to learn, and it is the teacher’s responsibility to ignite this burning desire by having a student-centered classroom where each child is challenged to reach their maximum potential. Infusing technology in World Language education is proven to be beneficial, as our society is technologically driven.
The infusion of technology in the classroom has become the modernized form of teaching, making teaching less monotonous.
This is why I am asking that you help our classroom! We are in need of laptops that will enhance student learning. These laptops will be used throughout the course of the year with a focus on student-centered learning. The access to the computer lab at our school is minimal, as we service approximately 950 students and it’s booked three weeks in advance. When I do have the chance, which is incredibly limited, of getting some time in the lab, it’s only to teach a lesson to one out of the twelve classes that I service.
However, the students love learning Spanish on the websites that I incorporate into their instructional time. The benefits of having laptops in the classroom include learning vocabulary at a faster pace and being able to research and write better in a language that is foreign to them. In addition, it will be easier to partner up with other schools where the students can orally practice the spanish language in video conferencing. Moreover, being able to listen to the language through various websites can increase the confidence in students and help them engage in conversation with not only their classmates, but people in their community. Please help me take our classroom one step closer to offering 1 to 1 technology for my students.
