Infrared Investigators: Help Students See the Invisible

Help me give my students ,many of whom are economically disadvantaged, two thermal infrared cameras (one for Android and one for iPhone) so they can explore real-world heat and energy concepts through engaging, hands-on physics learning.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

This demo uses a small thermal infrared (IR) camera that plugs into a smartphone to help students see heat. Everything around us gives off thermal IR light: our bodies, electronics, even a “ghost handprint” left on a desk. With these cameras, students can spot temperature differences around the room, see how breath shows up as hot or cold air, and watch how heat spreads and fades. It’s fun, weird, and instantly engaging.

Why This Matters in My Physics Classroom:

More than half of my students come from economically disadvantaged backgrounds. Many of them haven’t had the chance to use high-tech science tools or experience science in a hands-on, interactive way. A thermal camera brings abstract concepts like heat transfer, radiation, and blackbody emission to life...making the invisible visible!

For a lot of my students, this kind of tool can be a turning point. It builds confidence, sparks curiosity, and helps them connect classroom learning to the real world in ways that are exciting and memorable. It also supports inclusive learning. Everyone can “see” the science, regardless of their reading level or prior background.

Why I'm Asking for Two Cameras:

To make this demo work for all my students, I’m requesting two thermal cameras: one compatible with Android and one with iPhone. That way, no matter what device we use in class—or what students bring—we can make the activity accessible and interactive for everyone. Having both cameras means more flexibility, more hands-on time, and more chances for students to engage, explore, and say, “Whoa, that’s so cool!”

This isn’t just a request for tech, it’s a request for equity, curiosity, and a way to show students that science is something they do, not just read about.
