Informational Text Provides the Answers

My students need 32 science content readers that integrate our student, hands-on science materials with literature that supports the science core and key reading skills.

My Students

You can see the excitement in their eyes as they ask, "What are we doing in Earth Science today?" Science should be exciting to fifth graders. Their curiosity guides them through inquiry, observation, and further research.

One hundred and fifty students come into my classroom during the school year.

I'm responsible for exciting them about the study of our Earth and forces that shape and change it. These students depend on me to immerse them in activities that establish a strong foundation for them to build on as they continue to discover information about our Earth. Presently, thanks to Donors Choose, we engage in some fantastic hands-on learning experiences. The area that needs to be strengthened is access to science books that allow them to seek answers to their questions and tie all the learning together. Generally, I pull out numerous different non-fiction books and mark sections that the students are asked to read. What I need is enough student readers to facilitate student growth in science while promoting critical reading skills by using informational text.

My Project

Sixteen student readers which are shared by a pair of students can generate information about the forces affecting our Earth. "Inside Earth" and "Weathering and Erosion" address the forces changing the Earth's crust. As the students read and discover, they will also be integrating needed literary skills and developing strategies essential for reading informational text. What a valuable learning duo, facilitating a solid understanding of our changing Earth while preparing students for successful experiences with reading for evidence.

Please help me provide one hundred and fifty students with the tools that engage their curiosity for natural phenomena and integrates literacy to provide strong support for key science concepts.

"Inside Earth" and "Weathering and Erosion" will help students access prior knowledge while building background and setting a purpose for reading.
