Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

We are the first public STEM school developed in our rural border county. We’ve had great success with enabling students to explore, apply, and test what they learn. We use combinations of the project- and problem-based learning strategies, with collaborative and interactive learning activities. We have pioneered the introduction of engineering practices in elementary school in our region.

We integrate the scientific method and the engineering design process into all that we do.

We apply a trans-disciplinary approach to all subjects and make extensive use of models, simulations, and various hands-on experiences. We have great teachers, students, and technology, but we need the best tools we can find to synthesize student learning and maximize synergies.

My Project

Students need to read. Throughout our school, we strive to employ a holistic, trans-disciplinary approach to teaching. We work hard to make learning relevant and to demonstrate how all subject areas are not just interrelated, but interdependent. The requested publication has a variety of timely content and is updated monthly. Having these materials available for students provides teachers with a framework for establishing these connections.

Each student having their own copy increases the number of specific instructional techniques that can be used and affords an opportunity to also impart important lessons about personal accountability and preparedness.

This magazine comes with extensive instructional support, from quizzes and classroom activities to additional internet available content. Students learn, retain, synthesize, and apply new knowledge best through interacting with it in multiple media. Linking reading across the curriculum enhances and improves all facets of the total learning experience.

We have a classroom library of books, fiction, and non-fiction; we can look for information and read from resources online, but third graders are at a developmental stage where they are just beginning to understand accepting accountability for their own learning. Each student having something that they can think of as their own is a key element of helping them to be successful. Coupled with the recurring infusion of fresh, relevant content makes these resources extremely powerful.
